Meso-scale Modeling of Tension Analysis of Pure and Intra-ply Hybrid Woven Composites Using Finite Element Method

Abstract:

One of the key issues associated with using of composites in various applications is their tensile behavior. The tensile behavior of a composite material is strongly influenced by the properties of its constituents and their distribution. This paper focuses on gaining some insights into the tensile process of pure and hybrid woven composite reinforced with brittle and ductile yarns. For this purpose, mesoscale finite element simulations were performed to detect the tensile response within three types of composites: i.e, a brittle fiber reinforced composite, a ductile fiber reinforced composite and a brittle/ductile fiber reinforced composite. The numerical predictions were then compared with the experimental observations and the results were discussed to give some insights into the reinforcing mechanisms in the composites. Based on the results it can be concluded that this finite element model is a reliable tool in the prediction of the tensile behavior of pure and hybrid composite materials.

Investigation of Mode I Delamination Resistance in Inter-ply and Intra-ply Hybrid Composites Reinforced with Basalt/Nylon Woven Fabrics

Due to their sensitivity to impact-induced delamination, woven fabric reinforced polymer composites have limited practical applications. Hybridization of polymer composites has been proposed as a solution to this problem. In this study, the effects of fiber reinforcement type, hybridization method, plies stacking sequence and loading rate on mode I delamination behavior of pure basalt, pure nyl...

buckling of viscoelastic composite plates using the finite strip method

Modelling and finite element treatment of intra-ply shearing of woven fabric

Diaphragm forming of fibre/epoxy materials is a potential cost-effective approach in manufacturing aerospace components. Significant intra-ply shearing is essential in diaphragm forming a double-curvature geometry. In previous studies, the intra-ply shearing was addressed based on an ideal fibre reinforced fluid (IFRF) model. The IFRF model was tried in the present study for a thermoset materia...

Failure Prediction during uniaxial Superplastic Tension using Finite Element Method

Superplastic materials show a very high ductility. This is due to both peculiar process conditions and material intrinsic characteristics. However, a number of superplastic materials are subjected to cavitation during superplastic deformation. Evidently, extensive cavitation imposes significant limitations on their commercial application. The deformation and failure of superplastic sheet metals...
